This study describes the current situation of cultural associations, identifies challenges and makes recommendations for cultural associations, their interest groups and politicians. After all, cultural associations and voluntary work are important for the cultural infrastructure. Culture is the third largest area of engagement in Germany after sport, education and upbringing. Supporting cultural associations means strengthening civil society and promoting a vibrant democracy.

The study was compiled by the German Federation for Arts Education und Cultural Learning (BKJ) in cooperation with ZiviZ (Zivilgesellschaft in Zahlen). The results are mainly based on data from the ZiviZ-Survey 2017, a representative survey of all registered associations, foundations, non-profit limited liability companies and cooperatives in Germany.
