Why cultural learning and arts education are important

Discovering and developing your own strengths

When young people participate in cultural education programmes, they will discover and develop strengths and abilities that they may not even have been aware of. The act of seeing themselves as capable of learning, as being inventive and having a voice gives them the courage to meet new challenges. Cultural education strengthens their faith in their own capabilities.

Pursuing your own interests

Cultural education programmes offer children and young people opportunities to pursue their own questions and interests and delve deeper into issues that preoccupy them. They discover that a playful approach and forms of cultural expression are valuable tools for understanding things and expressing themselves. They experience education and learning as something that they can shape themselves and be in charge of.

Becoming involved and being self-effective

Cultural youth work and cultural projects show young people what it means to be taken seriously and being able to have a say and exert influence. Cultural education leaves children and young people with a lasting realisation that it is worth getting active and involved.

Going your own way – even if it is the long way round

Cultural education practice encourages children and young people to experiment and think laterally. Mistakes and taking the long way round are part of that. Children and young people find out and learn that it is not always the direct route that leads to the most interesting outcome and that playing is valuable in itself.

Changing perspectives

Culture, arts, playing and aesthetic experiences provide an opportunity to see the world from new angle. Children and young people learn that questioning the familiar and adopting unfamiliar perspectives can be enriching and discover that there may be different answers to a question and different solutions to a problem. Cultural education encourages children and young people to take different perspectives and form their own critical opinions.

Using forms of cultural expression

Cultural education enables children and young people to discover, try out, study and delve into forms of cultural expression, which are constantly changing partly because of digitalisation and digital forms of communication. Cultural education practice allows young people to experiment in analogue and digital worlds and explore and connect them.

Developing your own identity

Cultural education practice offers opportunities to swap, develop but also question roles, identities and positions. The exploration of other ways of life opens up new perspectives. Children and young people can look at themselves and the world together with others in a playful and artistic manner and develop their own position. They can create something that is important to them, share it with others and openly express their points of view.

Taking responsibility and experiencing teamwork

By working on a play or a dance performance, making a sculpture or writing a script, children and young people discover that sticking to and completing a project together as a group is worth it even when there are conflicts. They learn to take responsibility for their own actions and within the group.

Experiencing diversity as the norm

Cultural education programmes give children and young people the opportunity to show themselves and others how they experience the world and what they think about it. Pictures and stories can give a lively and appreciative portrayal of different views and forms of expression. Stereotypes and prejudices can be pushed into the background or be discussed proactively.

Experiencing art and culture

In cultural education programmes, children and young people learn a lot about which stories and traditions they are connected to and about other people’s ideas and visions. Creative-artistic explorations raise the question ‘what does this have to do with me and my life?’ Art and culture are experienced as life-enhancing, as something that is imbued with meaning and joie de vivre.

Understanding the world

Children and young people have to be able to find their own way in a complex world and take charge of their own life. Cultural education enables them to see the world (and their environment) as an expression of human culture. Cultural education also allows them to experiment and discover that processes and situations are often open or unclear and that decisions and changes are possible but often take time.

Changing the world

Cultural education offers children and young people the opportunity to critically and creatively explore their own self-image, their cultural heritage, the current social situation and future prospects at every stage of their lives. Young people are encouraged to develop their own visions and play an active role in shaping social developments in their daily lives.
